Your GP appointment is fifteen minutes long. Afterward, you're supposed to remember what was said, what to do next, and what it all meant. Most people can't. A specialist referral gets written, then it sits in a system somewhere until it's mailed, faxed, or handed over on paper. Weeks pass. By the time you see the specialist, you're repeating your history from memory, hoping you get the details right.
